In recognition of Edsger Dijkstra’s exceptional contributions to science, CWI bestows the Dijkstra Fellowships on scientists who have accomplished groundbreaking research in mathematics and computer sciences.

The Dijkstra Fellowships are awarded once every five years. In 2019, CWI granted the first Dijkstra Fellowships to David Chaum and Guido van Rossum. And in 2024 Marcin Żukowski became a Dijkstra Fellow.

The awarding ceremony serves as the midpoint of the annual CWI Lectures. During the CWI Lectures, the winners discus their work. Also, other key players in their areas of expertise present recent advances.

The Dijkstra Fellowships are named in honour of eminent mathematician and computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra, who developed pioneering work at CWI, such as his shortest path algorithm. Dijkstra is considered one of the most influential researchers in mathematics and computing science’s founding generation.
