Today, the competitive battleground between foundation models centers on open source versus closed source models. They are plenty. But tomorrow, the landscape is likely to concentrate on just a couple models as the space benefits from increasing returns (i.e., “winner-takes-all”). In this context, policymakers and regulators have a better chance of ensuring dynamic competition in an oligopolistic space, rather than reaching an atomistic market structure (i.e., diversity). This has strong implications for media and democracy.
