Monique Laurent of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has been appointed professor of Combinatorial Optimization at the Faculty of Economics and Business of Tilburg University. The field of combinatorial optimization deals with searching optimal solutions out of many possibilities, so many, that it will be too time-consuming to check them all. Examples can be found in the area of logistics, production planning and making schedules. Laurent designs efficient algorithms to tackle these combinatorial problems, using techniques from algebra, geometry and discrete mathematics.
Prof. dr. Monique Laurent (1960, Mont Saint Martin, France) studied mathematics at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie and received her PhD in 1986 in the same field at the Université Paris Diderot. She was a teacher at the City University of New York and New York University (1985-1986) and researcher at the Centre National d'Etudes des Télécommunications in Paris (1986-1988). From 1988 she was a researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique respectively for the Paris-Dauphine University and from 1992 for the Laboratoire d'Informatique de l'Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris.
Since 1997 she is a researcher at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam. In 2003 she received a Vidi grant from NWO (the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) to carry out research in the field of semidefinite programming and combinatorial optimization. The professorship at Tilburg University will continue for five years, starting from September 1, 2009.
