Prominent speakers from research and industry gave their vision on current research, and guests could meet with top mathematicians and computer scientists.

Amongst the keynote speakers was Alexander Rinnooy Kan, who discussed the question whether the Netherlands will be in the top 5 of knowledge-driven economies worldwide in 2020. Peter Molengraaf (Alliander), Carlo van de Weijer (TomTom), Jacob de Vlieg (eScience Center) and Michiel Buitelaar (Sanoma) spoke on the emerging role of mathematics and computer science in energy, logistics, life sciences and creative industry respectively. On the matchmaking-market, several research demonstrations were shown, including smart energy systems, dynamic planning methods, interactive television, simulations for drug research and a unique set-up that demonstrates shadow art in three dimensions.

CWI has a long tradition of cooperation with commerical and societal partners. The institute once simulated the dike height of the Dutch Delta Works and the wing of the Fokker Friendship airplane, and developed the train tables for the Dutch Railways. CWI regularly cooperates with major companies to help them understand complex software and works on the optimization of i.e. the ambulance planning in Amsterdam. Succesful spin-off companies include the Software Improvement Group (SIG), VectorWise and MonetDB.
