As of October 1, 2012, Joost Batenburg of Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has been appointed Professor of Discrete Mathematics and Tomography at the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University. It is a part-time appointment for one day per week.
Batenburg’s research is situated in the field of computational imaging, which deals with the development of fast and accurate algorithms for imaging objects from a limited set of indirect observations. In particular, he studies imaging problems in tomography, a field that deals with image reconstruction from projections. The topic is highly interdisciplinary, covering aspects from mathematics, computer science and physics. While image reconstruction problems are typically solved by means of algorithms based on continuous mathematics, Batenburg employs techniques and ideas from discrete mathematics to develop new reconstruction methods that can produce more accurate images from fewer observations.
The research of Batenburg has a wide range of applications, ranging from imaging of solar cell components at the nanoscale to imaging of large industrial objects for nondestructive testing. By studying these problems based on the underlying mathematical models, generic computational tools can be developed that can be applied to imaging problems at at all scales.
