On 22 November, Alina Striner of CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group was awarded the Best Paper Award at ICIDS 2019, the International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling. Striner won the award for the paper “A Spectrum of Audience Interactivity for Entertainment Domains”. Coauthors are Sasha Azad and Chris Martens (NC State University).
The topic of the paper aligns with the creative industries top sector, focusing on the fundamentals behind audiences and interaction. Audience interactivity has the power to immerse and empower audiences across different entertainment domains. Although these mediums use different terminology, sometimes describing interactive approaches as participatory or immersive, their desired outcome is to design fulfilling storytelling experiences. This paper introduces a Spectrum of Audience Interactivity that establishes a common taxonomy for designers working across the audience participation design space. The work expands on an early vocabulary developed through co-design sessions with children, conducting a cross-disciplinary literature review to evaluate and develop a validated spectrum.
The International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling (ICIDS) is the premier conference for researchers and practitioners concerned with studying digital interactive forms of narrative from a variety of perspectives, including the theoretical, technological, and applied design practices. The annual conference is an interdisciplinary gathering that combines technology-focused approaches with humanities-inspired theoretical inquiry, empirical research and artistic expression. ICIDS 2019 was held at the Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, Little Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City, UT, USA from November 19 to 22, 2019.
CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) research group focuses on facilitating and improving the way people access media and communicate with others and with the environment. They address key problems for society and science, resulting from the dense connectivity of content, people, and devices. The group uses recognized scientific methods, following a full-stack, experimental, and human-centered approach.
