Arnold Smeulders (COMMIT/, UvA and CWI) recently received an invitation to join the prestigious Academia Europaea. Membership of the Academia Europaea is a recognition of skill and knowledge in the international field of research. Among the few Dutch computer scientists in the Academia are Krzysztof Apt (CWI Fellow and UvA; since 2006), Paul Vitányi (emeritus CWI Fellow and UvA; since 2010), Jan Willem Klop (VU and emeritus CWI Fellow; since 2010), and Robbert Dijkgraaf. The invitation to join the Academia can only be received by peer-reviews.
Academia Europaea
The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988, and has over 2,000 members from thirty five European countries and eight non-European countries. The membership includes leading experts from the physical sciences and technology, biological sciences and medicine, mathematics, the letters and humanities, social and cognitive sciences, economics and the law.
COMMIT/ is a Netherlands use-inspired fundamental ICT research program based on a public-private partnership paradigm uniting academic research and (non-)profit organizations. Funded by the Government of the Netherlands with €50 million and with a total revenue of €110 million, COMMIT/ is the leading public-private ICT research community focusing on solving grand challenges in information and communication science for tomorrow’s society. Ten universities, five technological institutes, and over sixty small and large businesses participate in sixteen publicprivate multiparty projects. The results transcend considerably beyond stateoftheart knowledge transfer in an economic or societal urgent area. COMMIT/ is housed by CWI.
