Researchers Rodrigo Laiola Guimarães, Pablo Cesar and Dick Bulterman from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam have received the Best Paper Award on Multimedia at WebMedia2013 last month, with their article Personalized presentations from community assets.
Based on a four-years user-centered evaluation process, the paper provides useful insights into how a multimedia authoring system should be designed and architected for helping users in creating personalized video stories they care about. The resulting video stories, or mash-ups, integrate community media assets: media fragments contributed by a potentially wide and anonymous recording community. The target is small-scale events (such as a high school music concert), where lightly annotated media assets are provided.
This research was part of the EU-funded TA2 (Together Anywhere, Together Anytime) project. TA2 studied how technology can help to nurture relationships between households. On 28 January 2014, Rodrigo Laiola Guimarães will defend his thesis Socially-Aware Multimedia Authoring on this topic, with prof. dr. Dick Bulterman (CWI) as promoter and Pablo Cesar (CWI) as co-promoter.
