With the Van Wijngaarden Awards, CWI honours mathematicians and computer scientists who have made important contributions to their research field. A call for nominations is now open for the 2021 awarding.
Every five years, CWI bestows the Van Wijngaarden Awards to a mathematician and a computer scientist. The award recognizes the merit of their work on an international level. CWI welcomes nominations for the next awarding ceremony, which will take place in November 2021. Nominations are administered by CWI researcher Prof. Sander Bohte, who serves as the secretary of the award committee.
If you want to nominate a candidate, contact Prof. Bohte before 1 October 2020. Please provide a recommendation (maximum 500 words) explaining the nominee's contributions to research areas that are relevant to the Van Wijngaarden Award, as well as a link to the nominee’s research homepage or references to other relevant sources of information. The nominee's research activities must be in line with CWI's research themes: AI, Computation, Data, Networks, Software and Quantum.
The awards are named in memory after Adriaan van Wijngaarden (1916-1987), who is considered one of the founding fathers of computer science in the Netherlands. Van Wijngaarden served as director of Mathematisch Centrum (1961-1980), the institute currently named CWI. Established its creation in 2006, the award has been presented to six researchers. At the previous ceremony, in 2016, the award was presented to mathematician Sara van de Geer and computer scientist Xavier Leroy.
