Caroline Jagtenberg (former CWI PhD student) received the prestigious Jo van Nunen award for her CWI PhD thesis “Efficiency and Fairness in Ambulance Planning” on 30 November. The price has been awarded by VLM (Vereniging Logistiek Management).
This award is meant for research that positively positions Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the Dutch trade and industry and that builds a bridge between theory and practice.
In her thesis Caroline covers dynamic ambulance management (the real-time repositioning of idle vehicles), ambulance dispatching (is the closest vehicle always optimal?) and tactical models that optimize the trade-off between efficiency and fairness. The results of her thesis, which demonstrate a perfect combination between academic thoroughness and practical implications, show that through mathematics we are able to increase operational efficiency while giving people equal care regardless of where they are located.
The Jo van Nunen Award is an initiative of the Vereniging Logistiek Management. The prize has been named after visionair Jo van Nunen that was well known for building bridges between theory and practice within Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Operations Research.
Caroline Jagtenberg executed her PhD research in the CWI Stochastics group. Her promotors were Rob van der Mei (CWI) and prof.dr. S. Bhulai (VU University).
