In November 2016 Pablo César and David A. Shamma spoke at the first Intelligent Valley Forum in Nanjing, China. It was organized by Xinhuanet: China’s important central news service-oriented website, and one of the most influential news portals in the world. Xinhuanet is partner of the CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group. The forum focused on the topic “Made in China 2025”, discussing about the future of smart industries when influenced by artificial intelligence, smart robotics, and big data. Pablo César, leader of the DIS group, and senior scientist David A. Shamma represented CWI, showcasing the work on these areas developed by DIS.
César shared his vision about how signals from bio-sensors will affect a number of application areas. The work, lying at the intersection of smart and creative industries, explores the deployment of bio-sensor networks that can gather and process large volume of live bio-based data at cultural venues (theatres, concert halls). These data can be used to quantify audience experience, which helps to understand the reactions of the attendees better. Meaningful visualizations help stakeholders to learn about the actual effect of cultural events on people.
Shamma talked about the succesful collaboration between CWI and ByBorre at the RedBull party at the Amsterdam Dance Event. He showed preliminary results regarding a robust and accurate activity detection, based on ultra-low sampling rates of accelerometer signals. He also discussed the big difference between weak and strong artificial intelligence, and forecast how research and industry should be moving from the former to the latter to gain deeper understanding and conduct modern sensemaking using today’s data systems.
To conclude the forum, the Association of Sensing in IoT China was setup, to further facilitate collaboration between scientific institutions and the industry. Pablo César was appointed as a consultant of the association.
