Ute Ebert, group leader of CWI’s Multiscale Dynamics group, appeared on Dutch national TV in the NTR science television programme Focus. The episode on ‘Struck by lightning' showed what we do and don’t know about this fascinating phenomenon. Ebert explained which physical phenomena cause the beginning of lightning. The show aired on 5 September 2018 on NPO2 at 20.45h. It can also be seen online: 'Door de bliksem getroffen'; Ute Ebert can be seen from 20.29m.
The NTR writes about this episode: “For some persons lightning is beautiful, and for others terrible. Can we arm ourselves against this impressive, awe-inspiring - and increasingly common - natural phenomenon? What do we already know and above all: what do we not know yet? Focus shows how the Zwarte Cross terrain is made lightning-proof and speaks with a victim who has been struck by lightning, but who fortunately can tell us more about it. The Netherlands appears to have built the best lightning detector in the world. What do those most accurate lightning images ever look like?”
