Sander Bohte, researcher in the life science group of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, starts in collaboration with researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) a new project on spiking neural networks. The research is part of the NWO program Natural Artificial Intelligence.
Modern Artificial Intelligence is based on models of our brains: so-called deep neural networks. This form of Artificial Intelligence is already being used by Internet companies like Google and Facebook in speech and image recognition. However, such neural networks are only based on a rough model of how brains work.
In this project, the researchers aim to develop more powerful and more efficient neural networks based on advanced models of the building blocks of our brains: spiking neurons. With spiking neurons, more powerful neural networks can be applied in for instance smart phones for identification of persons or objects in images, or for direct translation of speech into another language
