As part of the research on Social XR, the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group from CWI hosted a meeting of the Immersive Media Group (IMG) of the Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG). VQEG brings international video quality assessment experts together to work on common goals, like the development of new standards.

The meeting took place from September 2nd until September 4th, 2024, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It brought together 26 international participants (7 attending online) from all over the world, representing industry and academia, with the ultimate goal of writing a new International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recommendation on test methods for evaluating extended reality communications. The ITU is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for many matters related to information and communication technologies.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the progress of the joint test plan on the evaluation of immersive communication systems. In particular, members of the 13 labs involved in the activity presented the status of the tests that they are running, including preliminary results, which led to interesting discussions and to advance on the ongoing work on the ITU-T recommendation P.IXC, titled “Interactive test methods for subjective assessment of extended reality communications”. The host, DIS, showcased as well their Social XR Lab, that enables remote participants to naturally and seamless communicate and collaborate in XR, using volumetric video.
