Databricks has strong ties to Amsterdam, where it operates its largest R&D hub outside the United States. The Amsterdam office, with approximately 280 employees, has its roots in Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). Early on, Databricks recruited a team of developers in Amsterdam, some of whom had worked at the CWI spin-off Vectorwise. This team laid the foundation for the Amsterdam office, which has since grown into a key location for the company’s research and development efforts.

Collaboration

CWI and Databricks have collaborated on several research initiatives over the years. As Databricks explains: "We have built close partnerships with local universities and research centers, helping translate cutting-edge research into product. For example, Databricks partners with Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), one of the world leaders in distributed systems and database research."
