ACM Multimedia is the worldwide premier conference and a key event to display scientific achievements and innovative industrial products in the multimedia field. It is the flagship of the ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (ACM SIGMM) which provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all aspects of multimedia computing, communication, storage, and applications. The DIS group keeps being deeply involved in the SIGMM community, with Pablo Cesar in the executive committee and acting as Editor in Chief of the SIGMM Records, the SIGMM quarterly magazine, and Silvia Rossi being also part of the SIGMM Records as Information Director. Silvia was also recently appointed as SIGMM Director of Conference at interim until June, 2025.

This year, ACM MM was held in Melbourne, Australia from October 28 to November 1, 2024. Pablo served as Technical Program Co-Chair in the Organising Committee which this year has received the record number of over 4,300 main conference submissions. Pablo was also one of the keynote speakers of the 2nd workshop on Methodologies for Multimedia, with the talk “Instrumenting and Evaluating Human Centered Multimedia Systems”.

During the conference, Xuemei Zhou presented her PhD research on quality assessment of point clouds with one paper in the main research track, “Deciphering Perceptual Quality in Colored Point Cloud: Prioritizing Geometry or Texture Distortion?”, and one in the co-located workshop (i.e., 3rd Workshop on Quality of Experience in Visual Multimedia Applications). Thomas Röggla presented the paper “Open-Sourcing VR2Gather: A Collaborative Social VR System for Adaptive Multi-Party Real Time Communication”, a video conferencing platform that enables XR experience” in the Open Source Competition track. Silvia, named as outstanding area chair, was also invited at the rising start workshop for area chairs where she presented an overview of her research, “The Impact of Understanding User Behaviour in eXtended Reality”, and participate at the discussion panel on “How to improve the review process at ACM MM?”.
