CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems group will be present at IBC 2018, from 14th to 18th of September at RAI Amsterdam, showcasing their research. The International Broadcasting Convention is the world's most influential media, entertainment and technology show. In its 50th anniversary, IBC2017 had a record attendance attracting more then 57,000 attendees from 170 countries around the world, exhibiting more than 1,700 of the world's key technology suppliers and showcasing a debate-leading conference. DIS will be presenting two of their ongoing research projects: 2IMMERSE and VRTogether
At booth 8.F46 the launch of a new open-source platform for Object Based Multiscreen Entertainment will be announced. The open-source platform, developed by the EU co-funded innovation project, is based on reusable components that will accelerate the development of new immersive multi-screen experiences, encourage the take-up of the HbbTV 2 specification and contribute towards its evolution. Programme exemplars based on high-value content forms including; MotoGP, the Emirates FA Cup final and award winning Theatre productions have been created to define and demonstrate the core platform capabilities. Here you can see an example of the possibilities enabled by our platform: MotoGP video. MotoGP video.
VRtogether, an EU co-funded innovation project, will be showcasing at booth 8.B05, the first pilot of the project: “Pilot 1: communication between remote participants”. In this pilot users will share a virtual scene by using VRtogether’s social VR platform, which enables photorealistic communication between remote participants. In the pilot, the users will be behind a one-way mirror of an interrogation room. Although users will be (virtually) next to each other, each user would see their own interrogation room, both being aware that the other user is having their own story. In the end, participants have a conversation about their impressions on the scenes they have just experienced. Here you can see a trailer of pilot one: Pilot 1 video.
CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) research group focuses on facilitating and improving the way people access media and communicate with others and with the environment. They address key problems for society and science, resulting from the dense connectivity of content, people, and devices. The group uses recognized scientific methods, following a full-stack, experimental, and human-centered approach.
