The countdown has started for CWI’s 75th anniversary. On various occasions in 2021, CWI will celebrate 75 years of ground-breaking research in mathematics and computer science.
Founded in 1946 as Mathematisch Centrum, our institute has been the birthplace of numerous scientific breakthroughs, and a breeding ground for talented researchers. To celebrate our 75th anniversary, CWI organizes several events to mark the anniversary.
On 11 February 2021, the actual 75th birthday of the institute, CWI hosts a special online celebration. This event features an overview of our most remarkable scientific achievements. But above all, the focus is on the future, with breakout sessions by CWI scientist. What do our they scientists see when they look ahead to the future of, for example, artificial intelligence or quantum computing? How do we deal with data in the future? And to what level of security can you make computers safe? All affiliates and friends of CWI, and anyone else interested in these research areas, are invited to join this event.
Later in the year, we will organize the awarding ceremony of the Van Wijngaarden Awards. Every five years the award is presented to a mathematician and computer scientist of special significance. The award is named in memory of Adriaan van Wijngaarden (1916-1987), who is considered one of the founding fathers of computer science in the Netherlands. Van Wijngaarden was director of Mathematisch Centrum (1961-1980), the institute currently named CWI.
Next to the Van Wijngaarden Awards, CWI will organize a new edition of the CWI Lectures. More details about this event will be shared in the course of 2021.
