As of January 1, 2010, Guido Schäfer from the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has been appointed Professor of Algorithmic Game Theory at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). It is a part-time appointment for one day a week.
Schäfer’s research focuses on algorithmic game theory which is a rather new and interdisciplinary research field that lies at the intersection of mathematics, computer science and economics. Algorithmic game theory unites ideas from operations research, optimization, algorithms, complexity and game theory. It addresses several real-world aspects that are of practical relevance such as lack of coordination, data uncertainty and limited resources. Results of this research field find their applications for instance in traffic, network routing and auctions.
Schäfer’s vision is to advance the field of algorithmic game theory by performing frontier research and to show that the field adds value to mathematics, computer science and economics. At the same time, he would like to demonstrate that algorithmic game theory can have a practical and societal impact by doing joint research with partners from the industry.
For four days a week, Schäfer continues his work at CWI in the research group Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization, headed by Monique Laurent. At CWI Schäfer is one of the coordinators of the algorithmic game theory project whose goal is to pursue research in this new direction and to extend the expertise in this field at CWI.
