Jan van Eijck has been appointed NIAS fellow on 1 September 2006. For five months he will be engaged in research on Games, Action and Social Software at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Wassenaar. During this period, scientists from different disciplines - philosophy, logic, computer science, psychology, and economics - collaborate in an intensive interactive setting to find a more unified view of social mechanisms.
The researchers will write a book and will organize several workshops on various aspects of social mechanisms, with feedback envisaged to people involved in the (re)design of social protocols, like EU representatives working on electoral reforms for an enlarged Europe, negotiators working towards peace in the Middle East, auction designers from E-Bay, and administrators responsible for allocating public contracts.
Jan van Eijck is researcher at the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam and professor of Computational Linguistics at Utrecht University. He specifically studies epistemic logic - the 'logic of knowledge and belief'.
