Jos Baeten elected ERCIM president

Jos Baeten, General Director of CWI, is elected as president of ERCIM (European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics) for a period of two years.

Jos Baeten, General Director of CWI, is elected as president of ERCIM (European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics) for a period of two years as of 1 January 2018. This happened at the General Assembly at the ERCIM fall meetings in Lissabon today. Jos Baeten succeeds Domenico Laforenza from the Institute for Informatics and Telematics (IIT) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) who served as the President of ERCIM since January 2014.

 Jos Baeten is General Director of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI), the national research centre for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. Baeten obtained a PhD in mathematics in 1985. A professor in computer science since 1991, since 2015 he is professor Theory of Computing at the University of Amsterdam . He started on 1 October 2011 as General Director of CWI.

The forthcoming years my focus will be on strengthening the ties with the European Commision together with our partners Informatics Europe and ACM Europe . Considering the increasing importance of informatics for technology and society and the creation of the 9th framework programme, it is of the utmost importance that our research area gets the required priority."

Baeten is well-known as a researcher in concurrency theory, formal methods and theory of computing. Baeten has wide experience in contract research, valorization and management.  When Jos Baeten started at CWI, Peter van Laarhoven (Chairman of the CWI Board) said: "Baeten is a powerful director, caring for people in an organization."

CWI founded ERCIM in 1989, jointly with INRIA (France) and GMD (Germany). The consortium's aim is to foster cooperation within the European research community in informatics and applied mathematics, as well as with the European Trade & Industry sector. At present national research organizations from fifteen European countries have joined ERCIM, employing altogether over seven thousand researchers.
