This autumn, Matthias Christandl has been appointed to the 2024 Turing Chair. As a leading researcher in quantum information theory, Christandl will visit Amsterdam at various intervals between October 2024 and early 2025. He is hosted at QuSoft and CWI. His appointment to the 2024 Turing Chair promises to foster a diverse range of academic activities, discussions, and collaborations, enriching the Amsterdam scientific communities.

Turing Chair

The Turing Chair is a rotating honorary position at the Faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam, and is associated with QuSoft. QuSoft, the Dutch research centre for quantum software and technology, was established by CWI and UvA in 2015. Previous Turing Chairs include distinguished researchers such as Gilles Brassard (2022-2023).

Expertise

In addition to holding the 2024 Turing Chair, Matthias Christandl is a professor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, Center Leader of the Quantum for Life Center funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and co-PI (principal investigator) of the VILLUM Foundation’s QMATH center, the Centre for Mathematics of Quantum Theory. He is also the head of the UCPH Quantum Hub, a cross-departmental and cross-faculty collaborative initiative. His extensive expertise spans quantum information, quantum cryptography, and mathematical physics.

Engagements and Activities

During his stay in Amsterdam, Matthias Christandl will work at QuSoft, engaging with the scientific community in Amsterdam through various activities, including seminars on his latest research and ‘QuLunches’, informal gatherings to encourage collaboration and discussions. On 3 December at 16:00h he will give a lecture at the renowned General Mathematics Colloquium. He may also deliver a guest lecture to students in the new MSc Quantum Computer Science programme at UvA, providing valuable academic insights. Additionally, he is expected to contribute to an event of EQSI, the European Quantum Software Institute, focusing on the future of quantum computing in Europe, scheduled for early 2025.
