Researcher and MT member Monique Laurent from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam has been invited to become a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen – KHMW) in Haarlem, the oldest academic society in the Netherlands. Established in 1752, the society aims at promoting science by awarding prizes and stipendia. It aspires to bridge the gap between science and society. Membership is granted by invitation only.
Other KHMW Members based at CWI are CWI director Jos Baeten, Ute Ebert, leader of CWI’s Multiscale Dynamics research group, and CWI Fellow Piet Hemker. Monique Laurent says: "I am happy and very honoured to become a member of the KHMW and hope to be able to use this opportunity to explore connections of mathematics with other sciences.”
In addition to being a senior researcher in CWI's Networks and Optimization research group and a member of the management team of CWI, Laurent is also a professor of Combinatorial Optimization at Tilburg University. In 2018 she was elected as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). She is also a Fellow of the international Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics - SIAM, for her contributions to this field, in particular in connecting discrete and polynomial optimization, and for her contributions to the mathematical community. She is much in demand as a speaker at international conferences. In 2014 she spoke at the International Congress of Mathematicians - the most important conference for mathematicians in the world, with thousands of participants. In July 2018 she held a plenary lecture at ISMP, the triennial international symposium of the Mathematical Optimization Society, for more than a thousand participants from science and industry, and later that month she opened the World Women in Mathematics event (WM)² in Rio de Janeiro, preceding the International Congress of Mathematicians and uniting female mathematicians from all over the world.
