The 'National Coalition for Sustainable Digitalization' (NCDD) presents a manifesto to Minister Adriaansens (EZK) today that encourages the creation of an integral approach to sustainable digitalization. CWI is one of 70 organizations that supports the manifesto. By developing and applying digital technologies and data, with an eye for fitting digital infrastructure and combating climate change, other negative environmental effects and impact on raw materials, the Netherlands must become a sustainable digital leader internationally. To this end, the coalition of over 70 organizations, together with government, business, knowledge institutions and residents, wants to cash in on existing opportunities, solve bottlenecks and develop a roadmap. This should accelerate the transition to a sustainable digital infrastructure and minimize the ecological footprint of our digital system.
The new coalition stems from the Amsterdam Economic Board initiative 'LEAP'. Together with ECP | Platform for the Information Society and the Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA), the foundations of the Netherlands as an international sustainable digital frontrunner are worked on further in public-private cooperation.
Bottlenecks and recommendations in sustainable Digitalization
The coalition identifies six bottlenecks and recommends solutions. These should form the basis for a "Roadmap for Sustainable Digitalization. For example, there is currently incoherent and fragmented government policy, a lack of figures to steer integrally, inadequate legislation, fragmented knowledge development and innovation, and a lack of a fair European playing field.
To solve these bottlenecks, the coalition offers recommendations:
- Unambiguous ownership in the form of a single coordinating ministry
- Steer more on data to gain insight to make the optimal trade-offs at the interface of digitization and sustainability
- Adaptation of (existing) (transition) legislation to ensure that sustainable choices are made as a matter of course
- A knowledge offensive that provides tools, knowledge and people
- Access to innovation must become more accessible, with a focus on integration of the energy system and digital system, with special attention to software, hardware and data processing.
- The Netherlands will also need to become even more visible in the European conversation on sustainable digitalization.
"The clock is ticking. Digitalization is an essential part of sustainability and digitalization must also be sustainable. Our coalition knows better than anyone else what opportunities there are, but also what bottlenecks we need to solve. We cannot do that without this government. It is time for collective decisiveness," says Eske van Egerschot-Montoya Martinez, of the National Coalition on Sustainable Digitalization .
Maintaining the Netherlands' leading position
Digitalization plays an important role in developing economic resilience and resilience. Now and in the future. It is also a key to accelerating economic and ecological sustainability. Where the Netherlands currently holds a fourth position in the EU leader group, making digitization more sustainable should secure and expand this position for the future.

To keep doing that in the future, we need to step up a gear and work together with the whole chain. The new coalition is going to help us do that," says Lotte de Bruijn, director NLdigital.
