Mathematician prof.dr. A. Schrijver has been appointed 'Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw'. On Monday, 19 September 2005 Lex Schrijver received the honour from dr. S.J. Noorda, President of the Board of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, on the occasion of the CWI Lectures 'Mathematics for Efficiency', organized in honour of professor Schrijver, who resigned as a member of the CWI Management Team and as leader of the research cluster Probability, Networks and Algorithms. Keynote speakers László Lovász (Microsoft Research and Eötvös University) and Paul Seymour (Princeton University) paid a tribute to him. Lex Schrijver continues his work at CWI as CWI Fellow, a position comparable to a university professor.
Lex Schrijver received the royal honour for his excellent scholarship. As a world leader in the field of combinatorial optimization, he developed this research into a real discipline and received many prizes for his work. He wrote several books, which inspired many students worldwide. Besides his work as a scientist at CWI, Schrijver is professor at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. Recently it was announced that he will receive the Spinoza Prize, sometimes called the 'Dutch Nobel Prize', in November 2005.
