Starting from 15 September 2014, Stefan Manegold, of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam, has been appointed Professor for Data Management at the Faculty of Science of Leiden University. It concerns a part-time appointment for one day per week with the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS) and the Leiden Centre of Data Science (LCDS). The rest of the time he will remain at CWI as leader of the research group Database Architectures.
Manegold's research work focusses on advancing data management technology to efficiently support demanding data science applications areas, such as large-scale data analytics (Big Data) and data intensive scientific discovery (eScience). His expertise comprises database architectures, query processing algorithms, and data management technology, with a particular focus on hardware-conscious algorithms and data structures, query optimization, scalability, performance, benchmarking and testing.
Manegold joined CWI in 1997. In 2009, together with co-authors Peter Boncz and Martin Kersten, he was awarded the prestigious 10-year Best Paper Award on exploiting the capabilities of modern hardware using new database technology. Since 2011, Manegold has been leading the internationally reknown Database Architectures research group at CWI. Manegold is also co-founder of CWI spin off MonetDB, the open-source column-oriented database system, and core member of the development team of MonetDB.
