Tim Baarslag, researcher at the Intelligent and Autonomous Systems group at CWI, is one of the five finalists for the ‘New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2018’ prize. This prize is awarded annually by New Scientist to a young researcher with a high scientific and social impact who reaches a broad audience through his or her outreach activities.
Tim Baarslag is the only Dutch finalist – and the first ever finalist from a knowledge organization other than a university. The other candidates (Hannelore Bové, Michiel Dusselier, Damya Laoui and Marjolein Vanoppen) are affiliated with Flemish universities.
The final winner, who will be announced on 31 May 2018, will be decided by popular vote and a jury score. The jury is chaired by Stan Gielen (chair of NWO). Other jury members are Melanie Peters (director Rathenau Instituut), Lieve van Hoof (co-chair of the Young Academy), Joos Vandewalle (chair of the KVAB) and Jim Jansen (New Scientist).
