After being announced earlier as a new member of the Young Academy, Tim Baarslag has now been officially installed as an academy member. The Young Academy is a platform for young internationally renowned scientists, within the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Together with nine other scientists, Tim was installed for a period of five years.
The ceremony took place on Zoom, and was broadcasted live on YouTube. A video recording of the ceremony, which was held in Dutch, can be viewed on YouTube. During the ceremony, Tim mentioned several topics he would like to address as an academy member. This included more openness in science, and more attention for societal consequences of new technologies created by scientists.
Negotiation algorithms
As an AI researcher, Baarslag studies negotiation algorithms at CWI’s Intelligent and Autonomous Systems group and Utrecht University. His research goal is to have computers negotiate complex contracts on behalf of users. Such contracts may include, for example, agreements on energy prices, pharmaceutical prices, or the price of a house. To achieve this goal, Baarslag develops algorithms that enable computers to autonomously learn and implement all important elements of a negotiation.
The Young Academy
The Young Academy functions as an independent platform within the KNAW. The group sets up activities in the fields of interdisciplinarity, scientific policy, internationalization, and science and society. It consists of fifty members, who have been appointed for a period of five years.
