During CRYPTO – one of the two leading crypto conferences in the world – two researchers from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam were honoured: Ronald Cramer and Marc Stevens. The 33rd CRYPTO conference took place in Santa Barbara, Ca., USA in August 2013.

On Tuesday 20 August Prof. Ronald Cramer was inaugurated as a Fellow of IACR, the International Association for Cryptologic Research. Cramer was praised for his "fundamental contributions to cryptography, sustained educational leadership in cryptography, and service to the IACR". Cramer is the first researcher working in the Netherlands to receive this prestigious award.
On the same day Marc Stevens received the Best Young-Authored Paper Award from the Crypto program committee for his paper "Counter-cryptanalysis: reconstructing Flame's new variant collision attack". He received a plaque during the business meeting on Tuesday evening. CWI cryptanalyst Stevens – known from breaking the https internet security in 2008 and the analysis of the Flame espionage software in 2012 – recently published open source software to detect forged digital signatures.
