The W3C Benelux Office hosted at CWI welcomes Logius as a new W3C Member. As the first government organization in the Benelux countries, Logius joins the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) on 1 July 2014. W3C is is an international community, aimed at the development of Web standards. Membership of W3C offers Logius an excellent opportunity to monitor the developments and to contribute to these international standards.
Government-wide standardization is important
Marc van Hilvoorde, team lead from the Centrum voor Standaarden of Logius explains: "Logius provides public service providers a reliable and secure infrastructure for the provision of information and services to citizens and businesses. Government-wide standardization is essential to develop a reliable, usable and secure digital infrastructure. Managing relevant Dutch standards and agreement systems is covered largely by Logius. Therefore the Membership of W3C fits well into the strategy of Logius".
About W3C
W3C was at the cradle of the World Wide Web and plays a key role in various areas of its further development. The organization presents itself as a guardian of the openness of the web. Among others, organizations such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Apple are active in W3C, which is known for standards such as HTML5, CSS and XML.
Since January 1998 CWI has been hosting the regional node for W3C activities in the Netherlands, and from May 2002 also for Belgium and Luxembourg: the W3C Benelux Office. The task of this office is to locally disseminate W3C standards and to recruit new member organizations to help W3C achieving its mission. Together with ISOC.nl the W3C Benelux Office organizes events on new standards with W3C experts.
