Willem Hundsdorfer has submitted the best mathematical research proposal in the 2003 Open Competition of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). As a result his project receives the Peterich Prize. This was announced by NWO on July 21, 2003. The proposal was selected from a total of sixty submissions.
CWI researcher Hundsdorfer, who works in the Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems research theme (MAS3), will use the prize to fund the project Multirate time stepping for partial differential equations. It focuses on the time step size in the computation of numerical solutions of certain problems, for example the electric discharge in lightning bolts. Varying the time step can drastically reduce computation time.
