Biography

Daan Crommelin is senior researcher in the Scientific Computing research group of CWI, and holds a part-time position as professor by special appointment of Numerical Analysis and Dynamical Systems at the KdV Institute for Mathematics, University of Amsterdam. He is a member of the CWI management team since 2021 and served as CWI group leader from 2013 until 2021.

Before joining CWI, he was a postdoc and Courant Instructor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science of New York University during 2003-2006. He received his PhD in 2003 from Utrecht University. His PhD thesis project was a research collaboration between the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). He obtained his MSc degree in theoretical physics and MA degree in philosophy at the University of Amsterdam.

Research

In his research, Daan Crommelin works on data-driven methods and stochastic modeling for complex multiscale systems, and on the analysis of uncertainties and rare/extreme events in such systems. He combines methods and concepts from scientific computing, applied probability and dynamical systems. An important part of his research is focused on mathematical challenges that arise in atmosphere-ocean-climate science. Other application topics he has worked on include fluid flow, renewable energy generation and power grids, epidemic modeling and computational chemistry.
